What is LASIK?

LASIK is a type of refractive surgery that allows patients to see without or with a little help from glasses and contact lenses. During LASIK, the interior of the cornea (the clear outer part of the eye) is reshaped using a laser. This allows the cornea to reflect light onto the retina correctly, allowing for clearer vision. This surgery has a very high success rate and is considered very safe. The entire surgery takes around 20 minutes.

Am I a Candidate for LASIK?

Most likely, yes! There are some conditions that may disqualify you for LASIK candidacy, however. You may not be a suitable LASIK candidate if you:

  • Are under the age of 21
  • Have a thin or unstable cornea
  • Have dry eye syndrome
  • Are not in good general health
  • Have had certain previous eye injuries
  • Have pre-existing conditions that may make LASIK surgery a big risk

If you find that you are not a good candidate for LASIK surgery, there are other surgeries that you may be suitable for. Ask one of our doctors at Fogg Remington EyeCare about your options!

LASIK in Fresno

LASIK is safer today than it ever has been thanks to advances in technology. Traditional LASIK is still considered safe; however, all-laser LASIK offers a bit more precision and safety to the procedure. All-laser LASIK surgery allows the doctors at Fogg Remington EyeCare to further refine and shape the cornea without the possibility of human error. Complications with traditional LASIK are very unlikely, however.

Wavefront

Aside from the advances in actual surgery equipment, great strides have been taken to make pre-op measurements and scans much more accurate. Tools such as the wavefront measurement system offer extremely precise, individualized measurements of the eye. Your doctor at Fogg Remington EyeCare will use these scans to completely customize your surgery. This is often referred to as custom LASIK or wavefront-guided LASIK. This is an excellent tool to utilize, as it makes LASIK that much more precise and maximizes results.

Lasers

The type of laser used to correct a refractive error is called an excimer laser, used in both traditional and all-laser LASIK. The excimer laser is an ultraviolet laser that creates a non-thermal or “cool” beam of light. This laser allows your doctor to reshape the cornea safely and effectively because there is no heat or damage to the surrounding tissue. There are many different types of excimer lasers available for use today.
